How to Take Care of Yourself This Winter

Kelly Zinzo

Winter months are tough; they are cold, dark, icy, and you rarely get to see the sun. Sure, there’s the excitement of all the holiday festivities for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year, but after that it’s easy to slip into being a little mopey. Keeping up with a self-care routine can help keep yourself out of the dumps if you have seasonal affective disorder.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a disorder that affects people when the seasons change. While it doesn’t always mean that it will only happen during the winter, that is what triggers most people’s worst symptoms. The symptoms include lack of interest in things that normally intrigue you, over-sleeping often, moodiness, fatigue, weight gain or loss, and overall fatigue. It can take it a serious toll on a person’s emotional and mental well-being if not handled with care.

Starting a self-care helps keep SAD manageable. It should NOT be considered selfish or an ego boost, but instead, a necessity. You cannot present the best of yourself to others in your life when you’re not feeling your best. Taking time to practice self-care will help you in all aspects of your life, whether it’s caring for others, managing stress, or even managing disorders like SAD, general anxiety, or depression. Some of the many ways you can practice self-care include but are not limited to:

  • Take a bath
  • Have a glass of wine, tea, or even hot chocolate
  • Read for FUN, not what is required of you
  • Detox from technology for a couple of hours (no phone, tv, laptop, or other devices!)
  • Journal or color in an adult coloring book
  • Watch a light-hearted tv show for a little while without the guilt
